SUSAN GUTELIUS
ITHACA - Susan Gutelius of 352 Snyder Hill Rd., Ithaca, passed away peacefully at home, due to cancer, on Tuesday, February 18, 2003, at the age of 55. Born on August 13, 1947, in Ithaca, Sue was the daughter of Cecil and Marie Beardsley Mount. She graduated with honors from the Trumansburg High School and earned her B.S. degree (honors) in Education from SUNY Oswego. She also received her permanent certification for teaching. Sue taught second grade at Pulaski for two years. She was a devoted teacher at St. Paul's Nursery School for eleven years (the last four years as director and head teacher.) Sue loved working with young children, sharing in their enthusiasm and willingness to try new projects. She especially enjoyed reading to them, doing arts and crafts, circle games and songs. In addition to her teaching at the nursery school, St. Paul's Church was a vital part of Sue's life as she taught both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and served on many committees. She also attended the Mary Durham Class on Sunday mornings for many years. For over a decade Sue was busy sewing and designing many craft items including puppets, many of which were sold through her business, Best Beginnings. She also spent many hours tending her vegetable garden. Sue is survived by her devoted husband of over 35 years, Jim Gutelius of Ithaca; a son, Doug (Mandi) Gutelius of Enfield; a daughter, Jill Gutelius (Pete Williams) of Oswego; a sister, Gwen Mount (Alden) Head of Moorestown, NJ; and numerous extended family members. A memorial service and celebration of Sue's life will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rebecca Dolch, officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sue's memory may be directed to St. Paul's UMC, 402 N. Aurora St., Ithaca, NY 14850 or to Hospicare, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
