Charles Tallman Obituary

Charles L. Tallman’s Life Journey

Charlie was born on September 21, 1948 in Dansville, NY. His parents Larry and Myrtle Tallman moved to Florida and finally settled in Trumansburg, NY where he attended and graduated from T-Burg schools. While there he played baseball and basketball and helped in his parents' meat market. He was a lifelong NY Yankees fan and had quite a collection of Yankees memorabilia.

When he graduated from high school, he went to work for First National Bank of Ithaca and rose to VP in charge of commercial lending. He was in banking for 17 years. Charlie began buying college town properties which he continued to own until his passing. At the same time he coached his son Mike’s baseball teams and watched him play hockey while volunteering for the IYHA. Charlie loved playing in the men's slowball league and playing golf with friends. Mike finally beat his dad in golf and the “bragging rights” competition began! He was president of the T-Burg Golf Course for 17 years and lovingly kept his ties to the T-Burg community all his life. After banking, Charlie was VP of Brown Cow Yogurt in Newfield and even opened a plant in California. After many years at Brown Cow, Charlie left to develop Lakewatch on the east side of Cayuga Lake, then became President of Bagelovers Bagels in Dryden. He had enormous energy and business sense and never stopped working until vascular dementia caused by a stroke slowed his life. Charlie was a lifelong member of the Ithaca Elks. He served on the Salvation Army Board for many years and was always concerned about people with food insecurities. He had a huge heart and helped many people very quietly. For many years, he and his wife enjoyed winter trips to the Fort Myers, FL area to play golf and watch Spring Training Baseball. Charlie loved his dogs and drove them to Florida many times.

Charlie is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years, Heather McCalmon Tallman, son Mike who he was so proud of, granddaughter Brodie, grandson Charles R. Tallman and “second son” Russ Johnson, wife Mariijane and their daughter Paige (Newell). He is also survived by his brother, Alan Tallman, wife Terry, and niece Lauren. Also by the McCalmon family in Colorado. He was predeceased by his sister Kathy Poyer.

A very special thanks to the loving and extraordinarily compassionate caregivers at Bridges Cornell Heights who took care of Charlie these last 3 years of his journey. If you knew Charlie please have a Coors Light or Coke and a slice of carrot cake in his honor. In place of flowers, please consider making a donation in Charlie’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association of Central NY (5015 Campuswood Dr. Suite 102, East Syracuse NY, 13057), to the Salvation Army of Ithaca, to the SCPA of Tompkins County (1640 Hanshaw Rd.), or to the charity of your choice.
