Richard Garner - Class Of 1963

Born May 25, 1945 to Esther (Perduyn) and Jasper Garner in Quincy MA, Dick died peacefully on August 24, 2018 (age 73).  At the end of World War II his father bought the local bowling alley in Trumansburg, NY and they moved to Whig Street when Dick was 5 years old.  He grew up on South Street where he fondly recalled bike riding with friends and days of building projects with supplies from Millspaugh’s Hardware.

One highlight was his role in the creation of Cornell’s Super Computer Lab.  His final assignments were in Dubai and Jordan.  During his long career he also worked for the Ithaca City School District, various startup companies in Syracuse and ELM Resources in Oakland, CA.

Dick contributed to the life of Trumansburg by serving on the School Board, Town Planning and Zoning Boards and running for village mayor and trustee. He had many hobbies including antique cars, biking, aviation and the open road.

He will always be remembered for his generosity, intelligence, curiosity, sense of humor and sense of justice.  Dick is survived by his wife Susan Perkins, sons Chris (daughter-in-law Monica Garner  of Andrews, MD)and Scott (Spokane, WA), daughter Elisabeth and son-in -law Travis Young (State College, PA), granddaughters Gigi, Julia and Laura, grandsons Finn and Luke, his sister Sallie Garner (Endwell), brother Steve  and sister-in-law Joan Garner (Trumansburg),  nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.  A private graveside service is planned.
