TRUMANSBURG — Richard A. Updike, 49, of Trumansburg, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 15, 1995 at his residence after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Richard was born August 28, 1946 in Ithaca, NY a son of the late Frederic and Emelia Brablic Updike. Richard was the owner and operator of Richard's Restaurant and Tri-County Bowling Lanes in Trumansburg. He purchased the business in 1973 from Charles and Marge Fulton.

Richard was an extremely generous and caring person and was always willing to help and provide to others. He had an interest in the youth of the community and helped many young people by providing jobs and giving them a sense of direction and responsibility.

He was an avid sportsman and was a staunch supporter and fan of the NFL Cleveland Browns; on several occasions he traveled to Cleveland for home games. He was active in bowling along with the operation of the business and sponsored several leagues. He also enjoyed golfing.

He was community oriented and was a member of the Trumansburg Chamber of Commerce and was the 1993 recipient of the chamber's "Businessman of the Year" award.

Richard was a member of the Tompkins County Restaurant and Hotel Association, he was highly respected by his fellow members. He was a member of both the local and national chapters of Bowling Proprietors Association. He was a member of the B.RO.E. Lodge #636 of Ithaca.

Richard was pre-deceased by a brother, Johnny who died in 1958. He was a life resident of the Trumansburg area. 
He is survived by two brothers., Frederic Updike III of Columbus, Ga., and David C. Updike of Ithaca, four sisters, Sue Updike Porter of Albany, N.Y, Dolly Esbjornsson of Sweden, Marie Updike of Madison, NJ, and Debra Updike of Key West, FL as well as two aunts, an uncle, five nieces, five nephews and a great nephew and cousins.

A Memorial Celebration of his life will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, 1995 in the Charles Dickerson Auditorium of the Trumansburg Central School. Rev. Thomas M. Lange will officiate. 

Members of the B.RO.E. Lodge #636 will present a Memorial Ritual as part of the service. 
Private burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Trumansburg.
